Heal Naturally at Root Acupuncture

If you know me, you know that I love sharing the local businesses, nonprofit organizations, and other treasures that make up the Monterey Bay community. Today, I'd like to introduce you to Root Acupuncture & Natural Medicine.

Owner Jennifer Root cares for patients with a wide variety of services including acupuncture, herbal medicine, manual therapy, and dietary/nutritional guidance, helping patients maintain a respectful balance between both ancient and modern medicine.

Acupuncture Goes Beyond Pain Relief

Speaking with Jennifer, she told us that many people come to her seeking acupuncture for pain relief. Many studies have shown the effectiveness of acupuncture for relieving pain, which has caused it to increase in popularity as an alternative to (or in combination with) pharmaceutical medication.

Jennifer says that while acupuncture is well-known, many people don’t realize the full scope of natural medicine. It isn’t until after the first acupuncture appointment in her Soquel, California based clinic that many of her patients realize Traditional Chinese Medicine can help them with many other ailments, such as “skin issues, stress relief, mood support, hormone balance, immune support, allergies and digestive or metabolic issues.”

Relaxation Services

Even if there are no existing issues, Traditional Chinese Medicine is a great way to maintain health and prioritize rest and relaxation of the body. We asked Jennifer what a few of her personal favorite services are, and she had this to say:

“I really like cupping and Gua Sha, which are manual therapies that use simple tools to release muscle tension, scar tissue adhesions and tight fascia. Cupping acts much like a reverse massage, drawing muscle tissue up and away from the bone, or away from other layers of soft tissue that may be tethered together by adhesions and tight fascia. Gua Sha uses the blunt edge of a Chinese soup spoon to massage tight muscles and their attachments, restoring blood flow to areas where it may be restricted by tension and scar tissue from repetitive strain.”

An Important Balance

Jennifer’s unique approach maintains a thoughtful balance between modern medicine and medicine that has been practiced over thousands of years and passed down through hundreds of generations. She has personally experienced the benefit of that balance, overcoming significant illness herself.  “Sharing that with others and empowering my patients to honor their natural capacity for healing is extremely rewarding,” she told us. “I feel grateful every day that I can practice such a profound system of medicine.”
